Stipendiary curates were licensed by the bishop to assist an incumbent at a fixed stipend, either in the parish church or in a dependent chapel of ease. Their appointment and stipend were regulated by the Acts 12 Anne Stat. 2 c.2 (1713), 36 Geo. III c.83 (1795), 53 Geo. III c.149 (1813), 57 Geo. III c.99, ss.48-70 (1817) and 1 & 2 Vict. c.106, ss.75-102 (1838)
