The school was built as a public elementary school for juniors and infants under the Rotherfield School Board in 1894. It was opened on 9 April 1894 and a further classroom was added in 1897. A separate infants' school was completed at the rear of the existing building in April 1900. In 1902 another room was added to the original building. In 1903, following the 1902 Education Act, the school came under the control of the Education Department of East Sussex County Council. Further improvements were made to the building including an extension in 1909. The school continued in use for juniors and infants until 1967 when Herne County Primary School was built in Herne Road and the juniors were transferred. Crowborough County Primary School was subsequently used as an infants' school and became known as Whitehill County Primary School
