Administrative / biographical background: The Society began life in Bideford in 1862 as the Western Counties Equitable Benefit Building Society. It changed its name to the Western Counties Building Society in 1934. Throughout the later twentieth century, it opened branches throughout Devon and other areas in the South-West. In 1985 it merged with the Ramsbury Building Society to become the West of England Building Society, which in turn became part of the Portman Building Society in 1990. In 2007, The Portman merged with Nationwide Building Society.
