Gallantry Notes: MC: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, when in command of his squadron. By his skill and courage he was enabled to make dispositions which held up a hostile attack. Later, he collected and reorganised scattered bodies of infantry and established them in a line of defence between his guns and it was in a great measure due to his coolness and initiative that the enemy was prevented from advancing further than he did.;

See Article Emma Gee, Winter 2001 submitted by Capt A Henshaw, Dgn Gds Museum: born 14/10/1889, son of John J Reid, of Coombe Lodge, Addington, Surrey. 2/Lt 15/8/1914(SR) Lieut 10/6/1916(SR) went out to Regt Feb 1915 with a second mg section and served with it in France until detached 26/2/1916 when mg sections formed into MG Sqns. Served 1 MG Sqn until end of the war; MID Oct 1916. Awarded MC for gallantry at Hamel on 4/4/1918. Out of the 50 men (or so) that he took with him from the Regt to 1 MG Sqn no less than eight won distinctions and 34 promoted to NCOs.
