Administrative / biographical background

The donor, born in 1920, is the son of John and Elizabeth Gibbons. Like her father, Elizabeth came from Moston, Manchester. She worked in Woollertons Cloth Warehouse in Thomas Street until her marriage in 1918. John was a silled metal worker. The Gibbons family came from Darley Dale, in Derbyshire. The donor's great great grandfather, Henry Gibbons was born there in 1811. He married a Darley Dale girl, Ellen Wall, and continued to reside there until his death in 1891. He earned his living as a wheelwright and joiner. His son, John, also a joiner and builder by trade made the move to Audenshaw in Manchester before his marriage in 1864 to a Mary Eastwood who lived there with her parents. John and Mary had 6 surviving children, 3 boys and girl. Their eldest son, William, a painter and decorator was the grandfather of the donor. He married Margaret Phillipson in 1888 and settled in Moston.
