The name of another Netherton hero has
been added to the growing list of those who
have made the greatest of all sacrifices in the
great war. Pte. Zach. Burton, of Cole Street,
Net her ton, brother of Mr. John Burton, head
of the firm of Messrs. Burton. Delingpole and
Co., Old Hill, has fallen in action. In civil life
deceased was employed by Messrs. Boulton and
Co., at Rowley. He joined the colours in
October of last year and so capable a soldier
did he prove himself that he was transferred to
the Machine Gun Corps. He was sent to France
on March 2nd and was reported missing 011
April 23rd. News has since been received that
his body had been recovered and buried. He
leaves a widow, who desires to express to her
many friends her grateful thanks for the
messages of sympathy. She states that she
would have liked to have been able to answer
them all, but so numerous were they that this
was impossible. A memorial service was hold
at St. Peter’s Church, at which all the rela-
tives and friends were present. Special hymns
were sung, iiv*d the Rev. J. N. E. Wareliam
delivered afi eloquent sermon, making a
touching rererehoe to the sacrifice made by
Pte. Burton, whose name has been added to the
Church roll of honour. Two other brothers
of the family are serving, and one has been
twice wounded.;
