Administrative / biographical background

William Holman Hunt, painter and founder - with J.E.Millais and D.G.Rossetti - of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, was born on 2 Apr 1827 and died on 7 Sep 1910. By 1860 he had an established reputation as a painter, especially of religious subjects, and had spent two years in Palestine (1854-6). In 1865 he married Fanny Waugh and set out for the East, but was detained by quarantine regulations in Florence, where his wife died in 1866. After several years in Italy and Palestine he returned to London in 1871 and remained there until 1875, when he went back to Palestine, after marrying his first wife's sister Marion Waugh in Switzerland. He returned to England in 1878, received the Order of Merit in 1905, and was buried in St Paul's Cathedral.

Henry Virtue Tebbs was a writer on religious subjects, fl. 1820-1870 (British Biographical Index).
