Description (What the record is about)
-
Half-leather album, 274x370mm, containing mounted prints, many with letterpress captions, from the collection of Edward and Henry Vibart. The album is in poor condition and in need of rebinding. It has an interesting history which is partly described in newspaper extracts accompanying it. The photographer J. C. A. Dannenberg is credited with the photographs although it is clear that some of them are Beato's which have been copied, trimmed and/or touched up. The quality of reproduction is often very poor and it is unclear which prints are gen, if any, are Dannenberg's work. Comparison should be made between 'Dannenberg's prints' and those in Photo 499, an album containing Beato views allegedly made from original plates purchased in Lucknow but which are of a similar size and quality to Dannenberg's (although they have not been disguised). The photographs record buildings and sites associated with the Indian Mutiny including copies of drawings. There are also 14 letterpress lists detailing the names of those who died at Cawnpore and who are remembered on tablets in the Memorial Church there. Three of the photographs (prints 13, 16 and 19) are photographic copies of lithographs from drawings by Charles Wade Crump, which were published as 'A pictorial record of the Cawnpore massacre, three original sketches, taken on the spot, by Charles Wade Crump' (Calcutta and London, 1858).
