Largely concerns his philanthropic work, including financial assistance for ministers of the Free Church of Scotland, local churches and overseas missions, schools, hospitals and requests made to him for personal loans. Also includes correspondence relating to his public engagements, invitations to political, ecclesiastic and charitable events, his involvement with the Royal Geographic Society and Geographical Club, social activities, and personal correspondence with friends and colleagues. Correspondence arranged alphabetically by correspondent.
