Administrative / biographical background

The League of Nations was established as a response to the First World War with the aim of preventing further wars through the use of international agreement. Lord Robert Cecil, later Viscount Cecil of Chelwood, who lived at Gale, Chelwood Gate in Danehill, was one of the founders. The Eastbourne branch was established in 1919; Dr H D Farnell was the first Chairman, and Lord Hartington was elected President. The first public meeting was held in Eastbourne Town Hall on 28 November 1919, and was addressed by Earl Lytton

The branch became part of the United Nations Association, after the latter was formed in 1945. For further information see AMS6559/7/4
