Dock and Harbour Engines (61 items).
Two 40 horse power independent crank engines, with 32 1/3 inch cylinder, 6 foot strokes, parallel motions, [cast iron beams, cast iron connecting rods].
Also rolling mill machinery and apparatus.Reverse plan of the engines and boilers, longitudinal section of engine and boiler, transverse sections and end view of the engines, transverse section of the boilers, plan of the tunnel and covering stones; air pump, condenser and hot water cistern - partially coloured original and partially coloured reverse drawings; columns and entablature - 1 coloured original and 2 coloured reverse drawings; spur pinion, spinning fly and wrought iron shaft, plan and section of the engine and boilers showing the steam and feed and hot water pipes and pumps etc., particulars of pipes and pumps etc. to be made at the Foundry, arch piece for end of columns etc. (original only), wheels and cast iron shafts for the connecting machinery - original and reverse drawings (several are coloured); packing stage, stairs and balcony - reverse plan and section; new steam pipes - original and copy sent to Foundry (the copy has a note by William Langdon on the sheet).
Drawings of the rolling mill machinery etc.: plan and sections of the mill and machinery; reverse sections of the platforms for the mill and driving machinery, sections showing the wheels and shafting for driving the small rolls and lathes and shears; reverse plan of the tunnels for the mill and driving machinery; plates for driving gearing plummer blocks - original and reverse copy; gearing for working shears, shaft and plummer blocks to connect the 5 inch shafting with the small bolt mill, large shears - original and reverse drawings; small shears - coloured original drawing marked "1 to this for Siam Mint"; gearing for working shears, lathe tools and wedges and holding down bolts - coloured original and coloured reverse drawings. All the drawings bear letter codes.
Plans, memoranda etc. re the mill: coloured plan of the proposed mill and one engine, Oct. 1843, marked "Scheme not adopted", and copy on tracing paper, and elevation of the proposed engine house and rolling mill on tracing paper; "Elevation of Proposed Machinery for a Rolling Mill with 2 40 horse independent engines", not dated, on tracing paper; plan of "proposed improvements in the arrangement of machinery for new metal mills", Dec. 1843, on tracing paper; transcript of letter and memorandum from J. Gossage to Capt. - Brandreth, dated 29 Jan. 1844 - account of the machinery, presses, tools etc. for making cast sheathing and other metal nails, wrought copper nails, tacks, brads, washers, roves, rivets etc. (2 sheets); tracing of plans and sections of stone foundations for sheet rolls by J. Bradley & Co., Stourbridge, Feb. 1844; letter from R. Grice dated Stourbridge, 10 Sep. 1845, with drawing of "fast crab for small mill".
Also the following later items: Transcript of letter from Alexander Laurie dated Chatham, 8 May 1855, with memorandum about alterations in the gearing; spur fly wheel - original and reverse drawing, and 2 drawings on tracing paper, wheel and pinion (sketches signed by T. P. Baker, Chief Engineer), Jul.-Sep. 1861; transcript of memorandum - "Specification for Spur Wheel, pinion & Fly Wheel, spare, for Machinery of Metal Mills", 3 Jul. 1874 (original signed by W. Eames, Engineer & Chief Inspector of Machinery and E. C. Warren, Assistant Master Shipwright); elevation of pinion framing, plan of roll and pinion (2 tracings, not dated).Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 948. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 152.
