Percy James Crickmore (1892-1959) was born in Northam in 1892. He attended Taunton?s Grammar School then the Hartley College and was appointed to his first teaching job at Portswood School. During the First World War he served as a gunner with the Royal Garrison Artillery (becoming commissioned), then returned briefly to Portswood School, before moving on to Western School (where he taught for ten years). In 1931 he moved to St Monica Road School where he stayed until 1934 when he was appointed as head of Swaythling Senior (later Secondary Modern) School. He retired from Swaythling in 1957 and died on 27 July 1959.
