He travelled the line from end to end, more than 4,000 yards, on more than one occasion, encoraging the gunners, siting and occupying new positions, and when nearly every gun was knocked out, rallying remnants of infantry and organising them for local defence. His splendid courage and energy were beyond all praise.;
