A box of materials relating to a lecture ("A Tribute to F M Bailey") given to members of the RSAA by Captain P E I Bailey, at the Society of Antiquaries, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London, on Wednesday 9 July, 2003. For a report of the lecture, see Asian Affairs, XXXV (2004), pp.271-2. Captain Bailey is nephew to Lieut-Col F M Bailey (see RSAA/SC/BAI).
The materials are as follows:
1. RSAA Lecture Programme card, listing the lecture by Capt P E I Bailey.
2. Lecture text (with marginal numbering to indicate the sequence of slides), title-sheet and final sheet with the signature of S M Farrington, dated 6 August, 2003. (Typed sheets x 14.)
3. Audio CDs x 2 (in one double jewel-case) of F M Bailey speaking about the Younghusband Mission. Date and origin of original recording unknown. The unmarked has an audio file of approximately 5 mins duration (sound quality poor). The CD marked "Master with e-Q" begins with the same audio file but terminates after approximatrely 2 mins (sound quality superior to the unmarked CD).
4. VHS cassette copy of a cine film ("Bhutan") shot by F M Bailey in 1928. Duration: 17 mins. Copy made by the British Film Institute. Extract shown at the end of P E I Bailey's lecture. Lord Allenby, in his introduction to F M Bailey's lecture ("Travels in Bhutan") to the Central Asian Society, on 12 March, 1930, remarked: "[Colonel Bailey] has recently been to Bhutan, where he was able to take a film, the first ever made of that country, which he is showing this afternoon." Lieut Col F M Bailey, "Travels in Bhutan," Journal of the Central Asian Society, XVII (1930), p. 206. The film begins with scenes in Sikkim (elephants in evidence), and includes dancing at Paro Dzong.
