Description (What the record is about)
-
Mainly from Tufton Beamish, including a few to his brother John ('Juan') in India, from the Central Mediterranean Force in Italy, Mar 1944 - Jan 1945 (45 items)
TB joined the CMF with the 1st Battalion, 5th Royal Northumberland Fusiliers in Mar 1944, and remained in Italy until he was sent on a course to the Staff College, Camberley, in Nov 1944. His letters contain very little about the action he saw, though he lost a finger, and was convalescent during August. During convalescence he visited Harold and Lady Dorothy Macmillan in the Bay of Naples area. His fullest description of travels in Italy is in a letter to John in Nov (no 43). No 27 includes the July and August issues of 'Aim' (Army Illustrated Magazine), with articles by TB on the Vickers Machine Gun. No 26 is a letter from Lord Cecil, Chelwood Gate, to Capt John Beamish, with thoughts on the post-war settlement (Aug 1944). No 44 is from Camberley. No 45 is from John Beamish in India, Jan [? 1945]
