A catalogue of the chained books [folio and quarto printed books] in Sion College Library. In the hand of John Spencer, Librarian of Sion College (d.1680). Compiled in 1653 and with additions made by Spencer to at least 1665 (a publication in 1665 is recorded at f. 15r , shelf mark E5:5), and probably to the time of the Fire of London in 1666. The catalogue is a shelf list, in shelf mark order. Each page is divided into nine sections, corresponding to the tables attached to the presses of chained books and showing the contents of each shelf in the chained section of the Library. The catalogue was intended to enable the Governors of Sion College to audit the books. f. 1v. An inscription, in the hand of John Spencer: 'This is a true catalogue of the bookes as they are written in the severall tables fixed to the desks of the Library, whereby the Governors of the College are desired from time to time to make examination. Entered by the Governors February 14th 1652'. Followed by the signatures of Lazarus Seaman, President, Robert Abbot, Thomas Gouge, Samuel Balmford and Samuel Clarke. ff. 2r-35r. Catalogue, from shelfmark A1:1 to Z4:14.
