Salt duties

Richard Grenfell, master, and Giles Gudge, mate, of the sloop 'Duporth' of Fowey, stated that on 23 Sep. last they shipped at Bristol 680 bushels of British salt on which duty had been paid, to carry it to Fowey on account of Anthony Nancollas, John Wheeler, Jane Daniel, John Cupps, John Lovering, and Joseph and Sarah Ham. The ship left Bristol on 26 Sep. and ran into stormy weather, taking in water and destroying 326 bushels of the salt: Collector of excise to make allowance of duty on salt lost.

Apprenticeship

Stated that George Dingle, jun. of Lezant was, on 21 Mar. 1812, bound an apprentice to Ralph Littlejohn of Lezant, cordwainer for term of 3 years from 2 Mar 1812. G.D. complained that R.L. had misused and "evil-treated" him, and had not given him sufficient food and drink. Court discharged G.D. from his apprenticeship. R.L. had received £13 from Thomas Raddall, yeoman, an overseer of Lezant as a consideration for teaching the apprentice and for providing for him "good wholesome and sufficient meat, drink, washing, lodging, shoes and aprons". R.L. ordered to repay T.R. £5 being part of the consideration.

Salt duties

Joseph Treffry of Plymouth, Devon, grocer, Richard Keast of Talland, mariner, Charles Bartlett of Talland, mariner affirmed on oath that Joseph Treffry, a Quaker, had on 17 Feb. 1812, together with his late partner John Abbott, ordered 400 bushels of British salt from Messrs. Lean and Stuckey of Bristol to be sent to Plymouth on which duty had been paid.

On 20 Feb. the salt was shipped at Bristol on board the schooner 'The Two Marys' from Looe. The vessel never arrived at Plymouth, J.T. believing that she was totally lost. R.K. stated that he was part owner of the vessel. C.B. stated that Philip Bartlett, his late brother, was mate on board 'The Two Marys', and that he P.B. and the rest of the crew were drowned: Collector of Excise to make allowance for duty paid on lost salt.
