Full green leather bound volume measuring 447 mm x 330 mm, with title and portrait of a seated Indian figure stamped in gilt on upper board, and elephant on rear board,and with additonal blind stamped decorations. Inscribed Received from Registrar May 28 1866 on front fixed endpaper. Binding repaired by Winstanley of Salisbury, 1978. The volume, together with volume I (see Photo 964/1) was originally in the European Printed Books Collection (pressmark X.493) and was transferred to Prints and Drawings Section in 1996. From the introduction: 'Our second volume is dedicated to Maharashtra, or Maratha Country, in which the great City of Bombay itself is situated. In no province of India has the Caste-system been so fully developed as in this part of the land. In consequence of this circumstance, it has been found necessary for us to make a selection of characters for representation in this work...'.
