Rugby Hospital was founded in Pennington Street in June 1869 by Miss Nicholson for the care of twelve inhabitants. It moved to Castle Street in 1872; the Pennington Street house was used for infectious cases. The Castle Street house was replaced in July 1884 by the newly built Hospital of St Cross on the Barby Road, largely paid for by Mr and Mrs R.H. Wood.
