Born in Chelsea, 1810. Joined 31st Regiment of Foot as an Ensign, 1828. Served in Afghanistan and India. Exchanged into the 29th Regiment, in order to remain in India. Appointed Acting Adjutant General to HM Forces in India, c.1849. Appointed Deputy Adjutant General, 1854. Commanded 2nd Division of Infantry and later commanded Azimghur Fighting Force, 1858. Returned to England on health grounds, 1858. Served as Permanent Under Secretary of State for War, 1861-1871. Gazetted Colonel of the 31st Regiment and subsequently of the East Surrey Regiment, 1862. Died, 1898.
