Steyning Workhouse and Southlands Hospital: alphabetical registers of inmates

Books arranged alphabetically by name recording inmates of the workhouse and infirmary. HW4/1-10 are labelled 'creed registers'; thereafter they are known as 'registers of inmates' and are slightly different in format. The information recorded is: name, year of birth, parish from which admitted, religious creed, name and address of nearest friend or relative and dates of admission and discharge. Each volume gives details of all the inmates already resident when it was begun, as well as later admissions

HW4/1-4 relate to the original Union workhouse at New Shoreham, 1882-1907; HW4/5 onwards cover the new buildings at Kingston from 1901. The overlap may be explained by the fact that the infirmary buildings were not ready for occupation until 1906 and the sick poor presumably remained in the old premises until then
