Description

The deposit consists mostly of 19th century title deeds, although the earliest go back to the late 17th century, and also a number of 18th century probates

It has been arranged according to individual properties and where possible the properties have been grouped together by parish. The papers cover a wide range of areas on the island including Newport, Niton, Chale, Carisbrooke, Freshwater, Godshill and Newchurch. Individual properties include The Blue School, Newport 1633-1971 (the school existed 1761-1907), later the Blue School Foundation Charity (title deeds, minute books, account books, ledgers, rule book, admittance book and miscellaneous), Town Gate Mill, Newport 1819-1929 (recently demolished), Jobson's Farm 1807-1911 and Lacey's Farm 1866-1920, both Niton, the Methodist Meeting House, Sandown 1806-1953, Gladices 1819-1960 and Corve Farm 1904-1941, both Chale, the Saunders Estate, Carisbrooke and Brambles Estate, Freshwater 1894-1922

The collection also contains the papers of Rev. George Liesching (brother-in-law of James Eldridge), Benjamin Cotton of Freshwater and James Blake of Yarmouth as well as the papers (minute books, accounts and miscellaneous) of the Newport Literary Society 1849-1956. There are also six boxes of 19th century probates which have been listed by surname in alphabetical order
