Administrative / biographical background

The circuit was formed in 1804 from parts of Bolton and Blackburn circuits and originally included societies at:

Bury, Radcliffe, Radcliffe Bridge, Ashworth, Unsworth, Haslingden, Edenfield, Flaxmoss, Ramsbottom,(Haslingden) Grane, Warren Lane, Whalley, Accrington

In 1814, a new Haslingden circuit was formed, so that by 1833 the circuit was reduced to the following societies:

Bury Radcliffe Close Radcliffe Bridge Unsworth - north & south from 1860, Moulding Tottington Brooksbottom & Summerseat Stone Pale (Whitefield) - to 1840

[records of Haslingden, Manchester Road circuit are held by Lancashire Record Office, Preston]

The following additional societies were subsequently formed within the circuit:

Lower Croft/Walshaw Lane 1839

Woolfold 1850

Pits o'th'Moor, Bury 1869

Elton 1885

Russell Street, Bury 1885 (mission 1878 on)

St. Paul's, Radcliffe 1885

Fairy Street (Bolton Road from 1913), Bury 1885 (mission 1876 on)

In 1889, the circuit was divided, and a separate Radcliffe Circuit formed from the Bridge, Close and St.Paul's Societies (for records of this circuit, see CMW).

After Methodist union in 1933, the circuit continued as Bury (Union St.) circuit until 1949, when all Methodist churches in the area were reorganised into a single new Bury circuit (for records of this circuit see CBH).
