Immediate source of acquisition

Deposited on permanent loan on 31 March 1966 by Miss P V J Hindley via the Business Archives Council having been listed by the Business Archives Council in April 1963. Two letter books of the linen merchant Henry J Hindley, 1762-1770 and 1773-1775 were not included in the deposit.

Administrative / biographical background

Charles A Hindley, upholder and furniture dealers, of 31 Berners Street were established in 1773. The firm existed until 1916 when it was absorbed into Marshall and Snelgrove. These papers include archives from the firms of Miles and Edwards, furniture makers, of Oxford Street and Benjamin Nias, furniture makers, of Berners Street.

Copies information

A microfilm of the collection is held by the Victoria and Albert Museum. The V and A have some additional records of CA Hindley and Hindley and Wilkinson, see footnote 2 on list.
