Charles A Hindley, furniture makers

This is a summary list of the records. A large number of items are difficult to identify. More research is necessary before a final list can be completed.

The Department of Furniture and Woodwork at the V and A has the following: photocopies of family correspondence transcribe from the originals by C A Hindley in 1947, c1763-c1920, various furniture catalogues of Hindley and Wilkinson, mostly incomplete, early 20th century including one of 1907, and Hindley and Wilkinson Ltd, a history of the firm written in 1922.</p> <p>3. Deposited on permanent loan on 31 March 1966 by Miss P V J Hindley via the Business Archives Council having been listed by the Business Archives Council in April 1963. Two letter books of the linen merchant Henry J Hindley, 1762-1770 and 1773-1775 were not included in the deposit.

Charles A Hindley, upholder and furniture dealers, of 31 Berners Street were established in 1773. The firm existed until 1916 when it was absorbed into Marshall and Snelgrove. These papers include archives from the firms of Miles and Edwards, furniture makers, of Oxford Street and Benjamin Nias, furniture makers, of Berners Street.

A microfilm of the collection is held by the Victoria and Albert Museum. The V and A have some additional records of CA Hindley and Hindley and Wilkinson, see footnote 2 on list.
