Description (What the record is about)
-
This collection of estate records largely consists of 17th and 18th century documents relating to Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, with a few items from other counties. They are additional to those in the Portland of Welbeck 2nd Deposit (DD/2P) in Nottinghamshire Archives and arranged under similar headings. The contents reflect those of the earlier deposits, DD/P and DD/2P, and also include 17th century records of the provision of timber for the iron and lead industries of north east Derbyshire (DD/3P/7) and 18th century records of coal mining in the same area (DD/3P/6). Taxation returns survive for the Hearth Tax for Bassetlaw Hundred in Nottinghamshire (DD/3P/18) and the 'Free and Voluntary Present' for the Scarsdale and High Peak Hundreds of Derbyshire (DD/3P/2), both for 1661. Further copies of mediaeval manorial customaries can be found at DD/3P/9.
Note that items with reference numbers in square brackets have been transferred and recatalogued with related documents in later deposits, chiefly DD/4P, and will no longer be located with their DD/3P references.

These documents relate to estates developed from the nucleus originally built up by Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury ('Bess of Hardwick') in the late 16th century, and subsequently passed down to Sir Charles Cavendish (her son by her third husband) and then to his son Sir William Cavendish, subsequently Earl and 1st Duke of Newcastle. The estates were further augmented by marriages into the Holles family (Earls of Clare) and the Harley family (Earls of Oxford), and eventually inherited by the Dukes of Portland. The records were held in the Estate Office at Welbeck Abbey until their deposit in the Nottinghamshire Records Office (now Nottinghamshire Archives) in 1950 and 1953 (Accessions 12 and 147).
