Description

Boyle Lectures delivered in 1745-46 by Joseph Roper (c.1686-1746), Rector of St. Nicholas Cole Abbey, London, 1720-46. Joseph Roper died before completing his series of Boyle Lectures. The present text is an unpolished draft. Sion L40.2/E34/1. 163 ff. f. 1. An inserted note: 'These sermons of Dr. Roper his widow desired might be placed among the manuscripts of Sion College Library. They are the imperfect remains of what he preached at the lectures of Mr. Boyle when he was prevented from proceeding by an unexpected and sudden death...'. ff. 2-29. First sermon, 7 Jan. 1744/5. ff. 30-56. Second sermon, 4 Feb. 1744/5. ff. 57-84. Third sermon, 4 March 1744/5. ff. 85-111. Fourth sermon, 1April 1744 [sic, but presumably 1745]. ff. 112-138. Fifth sermon. ff. 139-163. Fifth sermon. 6 May 1745. Below the title is a note 'see the other copy of this sermon'. Sion L40.2/E34/2. 156 ff. ff. 1-26. Sixth sermon. At f. 2 is a misbound leaf (original foliation 25) from tthe fifth sermon ff. 27-51. Seventh sermon. ff. 52-76. Eighth sermon. ff. 77-98. Ninth sermon. ff. 99-124. Tenth sermon. 3 Feb. 1745/6. ff. 125-156. [Eleventh sermon].

Note

Presented to Sion College in 1751 by Edward Cobden (1683-1764), Archdeacon of London (Sion L40.2/E64, Book of Benefactors, p. 258). Roper was President of Sion College 1736-7; Cobden was President in 1751.

Immediate source of acquisition
Seemingly unbound or in 11 facicules when first shelved at Sion College, with shelfmarks A60-70. Afterwards shelved as two vols with shelfmarks C82-83 (see Sion L40.2/E96, ff. 209v and printed leaf following). Quarter leather bindings with boards covered in marbled paper, each 210 x 170 mm., 18th century. Paper leaves, written in two or three hands (partly a fair copy with extensive corrections by Roper).
