Records of the Home for the aged and infirm, chronic sick, and able bodied at 100 Fishponds Road (now closed), originally the workhouse of Clifton Union (afterwards Barton Regis) which was established under the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834 (4 & 5 Wm.IV.c.76). In about 1837, owing to the extension of the boundaries, part of this Union was included within the city, but retained separate headquarters and administration at Eastville. By the Bristol Corporation Act of 1897 (60 & 61 Vict., c.230) there was one Union for the entire city with its headquarters at St Peter's Hospital which ceased to be a workhouse. In 1902 the Barton Regis Union was dissolved, its work taken over by the Bristol Board of Guardians.
The Administration of the Guardians continued until 1929 when under the Local Government Act of that date (19 Geo.V, c.17) this body ceased to function and was replaced by a committee of Council known as the Public Assistance Committee. In 1941 this committee became known as the Social Services committee and in 1948 the Welfare Services committee.
