The records in this sub collection are grouped alphabetically in accordance with the name of the Council ward the committee represented, with a three letter code denoting the first three letters of the committee name. Therefore Acocks Green Ward Committee (and its predecessors) is BCC 2/ACG, Aston Ward Committee (and its predecessors) is BCC 2/AST, and so on. The majority of this sub collection comprises minutes of the various Ward Committees (and predecessors). The records date from 1986, although some committees appear to have been appointed several years later.

The Area Committees were appointed in September 1984, predating the formation of Birmingham City Council two years later and the subsequent realignment of the city boundary. They were intended to provide local representation at ward level for constituents of their respective wards. From September 1991 the Area Sub-Committees became Ward Sub-Committees, with joint sub-committees being established for groups comprising several of the wards. The sub-committees and joint sub-committees met separately, and kept their own records and minutes.
Each Ward Sub-Committee comprised 3 Councillors for the respective ward. The role of the committees were to make recommendations on matters relating to Council functions and ensure that the duplication of Council functions and business did not occur. The sub-committee also had the power to make grants to Neighbourhood Offices, with the advice of the Community Affairs (Ad Hoc Decentralisation) Sub-Committee. From 1 January 2000 the Ward Sub-Committees became known as Ward Committees, and did not meet as joint bodies as many had done before.
As of December 2008 there are committees representing the Council wards of Acocks Green, Aston, Bartley Green, Billesley, Bordesley Green, Bournville, Brandwood, Edgbaston, Erdington, Hall Green, Handsworth Wood, Harborne, Hodge Hill, Kings Norton, Kingstanding, Ladywood, Longbridge, Lozells and East Handsworth, Moseley and Kings Heath, Nechells, Northfield, Oscott, Perry Barr, Quinton, Selly Oak, Shard End, Sheldon, Soho, South Yardley, Sparkbrook, Springfield, Stechford and Yardley North, Stockland Green, Sutton Four Oaks, Sutton New Hall, Sutton Trinity, Sutton Vesey, Tyburn, Washwood Heath, and Weoley.
