Description

Copy inquisition taken at Acheam co Salop before William Chorlton, esq., the escheator for the County of Salop and Marches of Wales adjacent to that county, on the death of John Lyngen knight, by oaths of William Leighton, esq., William Witcome, Thomas Acton, Thomas Poynor, John Barkeley, David Younge, Roger Boyste, Thomas Nicholls, Richard Smith, Robert Hodde, William Ragdon, Richard Jurden, Rugh Burley, Roger Gowre, Robert Tibbey.

Lyngen was seized of the manors of the manors of Yoculton and Stretton in the said county and by his deed of 12th January, 16 Henry VIII (1525) he confirmed to Richard Croft, esq., Edward Acton, esq., Robert Jones, clerk, Richard Mories clerk and Thomas Havard gentleman the said manors and capital messuages called Yoculton and Stretton to use of John Lyngen knight and Alianor his wife and his heirs.

By an indenture produced to the jurors in evidence (1) John Lyngen (2) Thomas Englefield, a Justice of Common Bench, Lyngen agreed that the trustees (after the deaths of himself and Alianor) should be seized of the manors etc. to use of John Lyngen, esq., his son and heir for his life, after the deaths of both father and son, to use of John Lyngen son and heir apparent of John Lyngen, esq., and his heirs for ever; by virtue of which the trustees entered the manors and are seized of them to the said uses. Elianor is still alive.

John Lyngen knight was also seized of the manors of Wentonore and Shelve and a moiety of the manor of Mynton and in the forest of Hoxetowe in the said county and by indenture produced to the jurors in evidence dated 5th August 21 Henry VIII (1529) confirmed to Thomas Troppenell, George Carewe, esq., Roger Younge, Griffin Barton, William Clynton, John Wigmore of Lucton junior, John Burghill, John Welforde and Thomas Havard gent., the manors and moiety of manor and forest, to use of Sir John Lyngeyn for his life, after to use of John Lyngeyn esq., for his life, and after to use of John Lyngeyn his son, and his heirs for ever, by virtue of which the trustees were and are seized to these uses. John Lyngen knight was also seized of the manor of Downe in Clunesland in the marches of Wales and by the same deed gave it to the same trustees to same uses, by virtue of which the trustees were and are seized to these uses.

The manors of Yoculton and Stretton are worth annually besides reprises £14 and are held of the berony of Cawrez for a rent of 16d. yearly for all services. The manor of Wentenore is worth annually besides reprises £6 and is held of the Earl of Arundell for a rent of 2s. yearly for all services. The manor of Shelve is worth besides reprises 36s. and is held of the king as parcel of his Marches as of the castle of Mountgomery for a rent of 2s. annually for all services; The moiety of the manor of Mynton is worth besides reprises 40s., the jurors do not know how it is held.

The forest of Hoxetowe is worth annually besides reprises £6 13s. 4d., the jurors do not know how it is held. The manor of Downe is worth besides reprises 26s. 8d., the jurors do not know how it is held. Lyngeyn held no other manors in chief or otherwise either in demesne or in reversion in the county or march. He died the penultimate day of April last past John Lyngen, esq., is his son and next heir aged 40 or more.
