Description (What the record is about)
-
A collection of 631 loose prints divided into two categories. Prints 1-356 are a selected series of enlargements from Girdwood's photographs (containing a good number of duplicates); the remainder, prints 357-631, are contact prints forming a more complete set of the series. The majority of prints in this latter series are included in the former and the contact prints (which are in addition in curled and generally poor condition) have not been individually catalogued. Captions for catalogued prints are taken from the typewritten labels or handwritten captions on the reverse. These captions are the ones given by the censor for public release during the war and therefore omit specific details as to location, precise date and military units concerned. However, the captions generally also cite Girdwood's original number, and many of these missing details can be obtained by referring to the fuller list, a copy of which is also included with the collection. Three prints (Photo 24, 354-356) were missing on receipt.
