Quarter leather and green cloth oblong folio album measuring 320 x 470 mm, with title as above stamped in gilt on upper board; containing 161 albumen prints, manuscripts maps charting the cruise of the cruise and a few Japanese padded drawings. In addition to the title stamped on the front of the album, the verso of the front free endpaper is also inscribed, Reise S. M. gedeckten Corvette Hertha (19 Geschütze, Commandant: Capitain z. S. von Kall) nach Ostasien. 1880 bis 1882. The front pastedown also bears the wetstamp of the Bibliothek des Pfarrers Vierthaler. The album is accompanied by a collection of letters, presumably written by an officer of the Hertha during the course of the voyage (unexamined). The photographs are comprised of commercial work purchased at various ports during the Hertha's tour of East Asia. The majority of the photographers are unidentified, apart from some English views from the Frith Series and Samoan views by John Davis. A photograph advertising the work of Baron von Stillfried is clearly the work of that photographer and at least some of the other Japanese views are almost certainly also by him. Locations represented in the album include: Kiel, Plymouth, Madeira, Cape Town, Melbourne, Samoa, Yokohama, Chefoo, Shanghai, Amoy, Fuchow, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Kobe, Hong Kong, Dartmouth, Halsingor, Jamaica and Dartmouth.
