County Borough of Doncaster: Finance

Many of the earliest financial accounts for the borough are to be found in the first volume of the borough act book, or 'courtier', but from 1608 there are several series of account books kept by the chamberlains, who were council members chosen annually to take the responsibility to account for borough revenue and expenditure. From 1755, the chamberlains were replaced by the corporation steward, an officer employed specifically to oversee borough finances. These accounts are accompanied by a series of vouchers from the 1620s to 1836. Annual accounts of income from municipal estates are to be found amongst the estate records. There are no accounts from 1817 until the series of printed annual abstract of accounts of the reformed corporation begin in 1837.
