The Rotherham Corporation Act of 1900 gave the Corporation power to operate tramways and the first two lines were opened in 1903. Four more lines were added later and connections were made with Sheffield and Mexborough and Swinton Tramways. In 1912 the tram route to Broom Road was extended to Maltby with trolleybuses. Motor buses were first introduced in 1913. Four tram routes were replaced by trolleybuses in 1929-31 and a fifth by motor buses in 1934. In 1933 the tram route to Sheffield was reconstructed and trams continued to run on this route until 1949. The last trolleybuses were withdrawn in 1965. In 1974 the Corporation Transport Dept was absorbed into the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive
