The company was incorporated in 1886, its prime movers being Davies Gilbert, W R Gade, an Alfriston landowner, A E Carey, a Newhaven civil engineer, John Every, Lewes ironfounder, Robert Lambe, an East Blatchington and Seaford farmer, and P S Lee, a London surveyor. The aim was to develop all the land between the old town and the esplanade, but only the Esplanade Hotel and houses in the Esplanade, College Road and Pelham Road were completed. Davies Gilbert who had been the company's dominant figure holding 2915 shares by 1896, applied for voluntary liquidation in 1898, and the company finally ceased to exist in 1913.
