PAPERS RELATING TO SALE OF ESTATE

Working papers produced during the sale of the estate form quite an important class, certainly more important than the general estate management papers already described. Several items take the form of agreements and contracts for sale, whether for very large properties like Alverstone, Woodhouse and Clavells, sold to Queen Victoria, JER/HBY/214/1, or rather smaller ones, for instance the building plots at Copse Lane, Freshwater, JER/HBY/222/2 et al. The sale of Newport House and its dependencies is well chronicled in JER/HBY/215/1. The arrangement of sub-classes is: Irish estates, individual Isle of Wight properties, general Isle of Wight sale. In general the less important items have been grouped into bundles and the more important items listed separately. Sub-classes are distinguished by rows of stars.

<p>There are attractive and typical sale catalogues respectively from the mid and late 19th century, JER/HBY/216/1 and JER/HBY/221/1 and from the early 20th century, JER/HBY/223/1.</p>
