Description (What the record is about)

These files were kept by the Public Health Department of Surrey County Council. They relate to a scheme run by the Council's Education Committee, that advertised 'hospital homes for crippled children'. Under this scheme, a child could be admitted to the hospital for the sum of £30 per annum. This sum was, in fact, paid to the Church of England Waifs and Stray Society by Surrey County Council on behalf of the child's parents.

Deposited by Mr J Hutchins, librarian at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford, in October 1999, under the 1958 Public Records Act. It was discovered during an office sort out.

St Nicholas and St Martin's Orthopaedic Hospital was run under the auspices of the Church of England Waifs and Strays Society, which was founded in 1881. In 1948, the hospital became known as the Rowley Bristow Orthopaedic Hospital Special School. For a more detailed history of the hospital see introduction to 6248/-.
