By an Act of 1843(6 and 7 Vict. c.36) land and buildings occupied by scientific, literary and fine art societies could gain exemption from local rates. Three copies of the rules of the society were to be submitted to the barrister appointed to certify rules of Friendly Societies for his approval, and one of the certified copies was then to be deposited with the clerk of the peace.
