Administrative / biographical background (Historical or biographical information about the creator of the record and the context of its creation)

Lancaster Methodist Circuit
The Lancaster area was originally part of Haworth Wesleyan Circuit which was later divided into successively smaller circuits so that Lancaster came under Colne and Blackburn Circuits when they were created in 1776 and 1787 respectively. Lancaster Wesleyan Circuit was formally established in 1794. Further circuits were created from parts of Lancaster, including Kendal in 1805 and Morecambe in 1894, while some chapels on the eastern fringe were transferred to Settle c.1830.
There were separate circuits in Lancaster for the Primitive Methodists and the United Methodists (see MLA 2 and 3). The United Methodist Circuit was abolished in the 1930s as described in section 3. The Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist Circuits continued their separate existence after Methodist Union in 1932 (but with different names) and were finally merged in 1958 to form Lancaster Methodist Circuit.
A useful historical outline can be found in MLA 1/7/6.
