Administrative / biographical background

Founded in 1829, the MUOB split in 1841, when the London District left the Society. It was at this time that the central office of the society became located in Manchester. The MUOB was reconstituted in the 1860's, but from the 1880's its position, relative to the Operative Bricklayers' Society, declined. In 1920 it was agreed that the MUOB should merge into the Amalgamated Union of Building Trade Workers.
