Sarah Martin (1791-1843), a dressmaker in humble circumstances at Great Yarmouth, made it her life's work from 1819 onwards to visit the then notorious jail and improve physical and spiritual conditions there. Her journals and account books 1823-1843 are preserved in the Tolhouse Museum at Yarmouth.
