Description (What the record is about)
-
The majority of these records concern tin mining; a few relate to copper mining. Most date from the eighteenth century, when the administration of the estate had moved from a manorial basis to a centralized system, and therefore have been arranged by parish rather than by manor. See AR/1, AR/2 and AR/4 for some early mining records and AR/8 for financial records combining estate and mining business.
AR/14/1 - 54 The general section contains records concerning several parishes and those where the parish is unspecified or unclear. It includes leases, bonds, vouchers, legal papers, letting surveys, shipping bills and two diagrams of engines.
AR/14/55 - 146 Accounts and financial papers for several parishes and where the parish is unspecified or unclear.
AR/14/147 - 190 Correspondence concerning mining, mainly to members of the Arundell family and their stewards. See also AR/10 for letters containing tin business included in the main series of estate correspondence.
AR/14/191 - 213 Notes on ore samples and prices.
AR/14/214 - 466 The records arranged by parish comprise setts, agreements, licences, petitions, legal papers, accounts and receipts. The records for St Mewan parish include all those for Polgooth mine which lay partly in St Mewan, partly in St Austell and partly in St Ewe United Mines in Gwennap consisted of Ale and Cakes, Poldory, Wheal Squire and Cupboard Hill.
