Description (What the record is about)
-
This Association, financed by subscriptions from local authorities and from local playing fields committees, makes grants for the acquisition and maintenance of playing fields and recreation grounds under the Physical Training and Recreation Act 1937. It also gives advice on such matters as establishing, maintaining and insuring playing fields
It was established in 1926 as the East Sussex County Playing Fields Association, and a West Sussex Association covered West Sussex
On the formation of the Sussex Rural Community Council in 1931 (see RCC 1 and 2) the Association's officers and secretariat were transferred to the Council and the Appeals and Grants Committee members were appointed en bloc as the Council's Playing Fields Sub-Committee. In 1937 the two Associations agreed to merge into a single association affiliated to the National Playing Fields Association. During the war the Association's work was largely suspended but in 1946 the constitution was revised and a new Executive Committee and Honorary Secretary appointed. The Association continued to lease an office in Sussex House from the SRCC until 1989. In 1989 the Association was administered from the house of its then secretary, D G Burge, in Eastbourne
