Administrative / biographical background

The Reydon Estate Charity was created by an order of the Charity Commission dated 15 December 1992, from the Reydon Church and Poors Charity. The Reydon Church and Poors Charity consisted of two charities:-

1. The Church Lands Charity under which several small pieces of land in the parish, including:-

a) Gravel Pit Piece (No. 242 on the Tithe Map) c.4a 12p in total. Sold in two lots, (OS Nos. 265 and 206) in 1960 - 1961? containing Gravel Pit and Gravel Pit Field (2 11 1/2a).

b) Piece in Neat House Field (No. 238 on the Tithe Map c.1r 25p (part of OS No. 285), sold in 1971 - 1972.

c) Town House Piece/Field (No. 407 on the Tithe Map) c.2a 3r 24p in Lowestoft Road and an allotment of 24a 2r 20p (No. 368 on the Tithe Map).

d) Church Pightle/Green (No. 186 on the Tithe Map) originally 2a 1r 12p, then in 1927 3r 27p were sold to extend the churchyard and the proceeds invested.

e) Part of Homefield (No. 231 on the Tithe Map) c.3r sold in 1899 to the Coast Development Company and the money invested.

were let by the churchwardens and the rents received were used by them to repair the church and aid the poor.

2. The Fund arising from the sale of land in 1803 under which £500 raised from the sale of c.16a called Reydon Ridge to Sir Thomas Gooch of Benacre Hall, was invested in consolidated annuities and the interest arising therefrom was divided equally to aid the poor and the church rates.

The income under the new scheme of 1992 was to be divided equally between the Parochial Church Council of St. Margaret's Reydon, (to use towards the religious and charitable work of the Church of England in the parish) and the Trustees of the Poor's Allotment in the ancient parish of Reydon.
