Administrative / biographical background

James Bishop began manufacturing boots and shoes in Southampton in 1850. Ten years later he opened a shop at 198 Commercial Road, Portsmouth and this became the main shop in the early 1890s. By 1900 there were branches at Winchester, London (for a while), Havant, Gosport, as well as other places. The actual manufacture of shoes ceased in 1905 but the firm continued in the family's possession, though it became a limited company in 1949.
