Administrative / biographical background

Incorporated as a Private Limited Company on the 19 April 1920, the Wensley Lime Company Limited launched with an initial capital of £50,000. It was formed with the primary objective of mining limestone, and other minerals such as gannister, for use in the steel industry. Limestone is vital in the steel making process to assist in the separation and melting of impurities formed within the blast furnace.

The land to be mined was located in Wensley in the North Riding of Yorkshire and was leased from Lord Bolton. Further land at nearby Preston under Scar was also mined.

Cargo Fleet Iron Company Limited became a majority shareholder, thereby ensuring a ready supply of limestone, and in doing so supplied the Wensley Board with a new Chairman and several Directors.

The company was wound up in 1953.
