Administrative / biographical background

Chichester R.D.C. was formed under the West Sussex Review Order of 1933 and came into existence on 1 April of that year. It was composed of the whole of the former Westbourne R.D.C. and Westhampnett R.D.C. together with the Parishes of Climping, Ford, and Tortington from the former East Preston R.D.C.

The following is a list of the parishes of Chichester R.D.C.: Aldingbourne, Appledram, Barnham, Bersted, Birdham, Bosham, Boxgrove, Chidham, Climping, Compton, [consisting of the former Compton and Up Marden parishes], East Dean, West Dean [consisting of the former West Dean and Binderton parishes], Donnington, Earnley, Eartham, Eastergate, Ford, Funtington [consisting of the former Funtington and West Stoke Parishes and Part of New Fishbourne parish], Hunston, West Itchenor, Lavant, Madehurst, Marden [consisting of the former East Marden and North Marden Parishes], Middleton, North Mundham, Oving [consisting of the former Oving and Merston Parishes], Pagham, Selsey, Sidlesham, Singleton, Slindon and Stoughton [consisting of the former Stoughton and Racton Parishes], Tangmere, West Thorney, Tortington [consisting of the former Tortington and Binsted Parishes], Upealtham, Walberton, Westbourne, Westhampnett, East Wittering, West Wittering and Yapton.

The 1933 Review Order also altered many parish boundaries. The major changes appear above but for full details see Boundary Changes in West Sussex (W.S.R.O. MP 1348).

There were no major boundary changes between 1933 and 1974. In 1934 Middleton Parish was re-named Middleton-on-Sea. The County of West Sussex (Parishes of Boxgrove, Tangmere and Oving) Confirmation Order 1972, transferred parts of Boxgrove to Tangmere, parts of Tangmere to Oving and parts of Oving to Tangmere. See WOC/CC7/3/15A and B for full details.
