Custodial history

The records forming the second deposit were clearly accumulated by Philip George, jun., sometime Town Clerk of Bath, Clerk to the Turnpike Trustees from 1809, and a solicitor in his own right. His activities in both the two last capacities are represented here; D/T/ba 13 and 26-47 being turnpike records and D/T/ba 48-64 being private records.

D/T/ba/48-64 appear to have come into the hands of Philip George, junior, as the legal representative of Elizabeth Morris, widow, in turn executrix of her husband, John Morris.

John Morris was himself a solicitor, and the records were largely accumulated by him. They comprise records of the family's property, records of related families (e.g. Coles, Webb) received either through inheritance of property or by acting as trustee or executor, and records of non-related families for whom he acted in similar capacities. It is possible that George and Morris were in partnership; certainly, George acted for Morris during an illness of the latter.
