Broads Consortium

A single authority for the Broadland area was first discussed in 1947 when it was unsuccessfully put forward for designation as a National Park. Established in 1966 as an interim measure and designed to produce a blue-print for the future administration of the conservation and development proposals in relation to both land and water resources, the Broads Consortium was, at first, made up of the three major authorities in the area:- Norfolk County Council, The East Suffolk and Norfolk River Authority and Great Yarmouth Port and Haven Commissioners. All came under an independent chairman and in the same year the Broadland Study and Plan was commissioned by the Consortium from a department of one of its own constituents: the Norfolk County Council Planning Department. In 1968 the East Suffolk County Council joined as a representative and in 1971 the Consortium was dissolved and all outstanding matters dealt with by the Chief Executive and Clerk's Department of Norfolk County Council.
