Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume S3 is the third in the series of four 'S' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of London, which were transferred to Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Cluttons. The preferments in this volume concern the London Bishoprick Estates, which were vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 30 December 1868 by vacancy. ; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports. ; The volume also has annotations often regarding the disposal of property since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporates later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Middlesex, parishes of Norholt, Hornsey, Finchley, Fulham, Great Greenford, Hanwell, Ealing, Greenford, Acton, Heston, Hillingdon, West Drayton, East Bedfont and Hammersmith; the county of Essex, parishes of Fairstead, Cressing, Noth Benfleet, Rawreth, Wichford, Wethersfield, Frith and Pattiswick [Patteswick or Patterswick]; the county of Hertfordshire, parishes of Bishops Stortford, Broxbourne, Hoddesdon, Much Hadlam, Stevenage and Rickmansworth; the county of Buckinghamshire, parish of Iver; and the county of Lincolnshire, parish of Witham.
