Administrative / biographical background

The first company 'for improving' the Ribble Navigation was formed in 1806 and a second in 1838, after the passing of an Act to enable it to raise more capital. The 1853 Act dissolved this company and a third one was established. The Corporation, which had been a shareholder since December 1837, finally purchased the undertaking in 1883. A detailed study - James Barron's A History of the Ribble Navigation - was published by the Corporation in 1938.
